Floyd Mayweather Jr. mouthed his rant to the sanctioning boxing bodies for having too many championship belts resulting in more champions.
Mayweather, who was about making money during his fighting career, added that promotions are to be blamed and his own, the Mayweather Promotions.
‘Too many champions. It’s not such a thing as a super champion, not at all. And I’m not taking anything away from no fighter. It’s too many belts,’ said the 50-0 Mayweather.
He reasoned out that they are making many champions because they have three percent of the champion’s purse.
While it is benefiting the purse of the WBA, WBO, WBC, IBF, and the likes, it is hurting the sport’s image.
The evident scene while boxing returned in a bubble while the pandemic is ongoing. TV ratings are on a landslide compared to other combat sports like UFC, who gained enough viewership.
‘You guys are just making extra money from all these fighters, getting extra money from sanctioning fees. And this goes for my company as well. We have to clean this sport of boxing up. This s***, this doesn’t look good. When you look at TV now, everybody’s a champion. You see all these fighters posing with a belt,’ Mayweather added.
The retired American statement. Champions should be rare and few. And this is making boxing a little less competitive.
It goes with the saying, “many were called, but only a few were chosen.”
